I like Japanese style but like Kevin I can't maintain the level of organization needed for it. I also like totally modern whacky styles- odd shaped purple sofas, lime green round coffee tables- stuff you find in funky furniture shops on Melrose in L.A. Or I could go for the modern minimalist feel, but like Japanese that's too tricky to maintain.

None of that matters, though, because let's face it, I don't really have a say. My wife sets the tone for the house. We got a bunch of furniture from her parents- a Thai dining room set that is really cool, Chinese bucket chairs and little coffee tables, and some other pieces. Our bedroom furniture is more Southern formal- dark polished wood, brass handles, etc. I don't like that style, but oh well.

Our house is a 40 year old single story affair on a corner lot with a nice sized (for SoCal) yard. We had to scrape walls and floors, pull carpet and tile, remove pop-corn ceilings, change kitchen tiles, etc. Now we have well coordinated basic colors on all the walls, a bare concrete slab with a swirled layer of concrete floated on top for effect, and area rugs in all the rooms. The concrete floor thing was meant to be temporary, but apparently it's the chic urban thing (think Urban Outfiiters) so we're staying with it for now.

At some point we might go all out and get a whole new set of stuff. In that case, I'm planning on going to Bali for a month and getting everything hand-made there. The prices are incredible and the quality of the wood and the workmanship is high. I'm outsourcing my furniture, is that bad? Speaking of which, I used to host a site for a guy that sold export furniture from Indonedia. He was American but living in Bali, he had this site built in Perl and he paid a team of guys there about $50 a day to maintain the whole thing.
