Didn't say the solution was without merit. But the way you mentioned it seemed to me to be mean spirited. In a conversation with someone who obviously supports the other side very strongly you basically said to hell with your side or helping them work towards a solution. I would give everything to those you oppose. It seemed as much a dig against Michael as it did a possible solution. I rarely agree with Michael on Israeli Palestinian issues but you seemed disrespectful in your post. I am not discounting that I may have read into it. It just seemed a little crasser than required.
I too would put the majority of my efforts into building up the Palestinians. Helping them develop an economy, create a viable police force, security force, education system and infrastructure. But I would also put some effort into helping the Israelis to ensure the safety of their people as well. -----Original Message----- From: Jerry Johnson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 22, 2004 8:59 AM To: CF-Community Subject: RE: Dying for the United Nations Mean spirited in what way? I don't think the status-quo is getting ANYONE anywhere. I think the quicker we can get a solution on the ground of any sort, the happier most people will be. I understand a majority of Palestinians want a solution to this situation. Let's help them. I believe that if the attacks from outside Israel stopped, the Israelis would stop striking back. Let's help them. I think it would be good if we could isolate the problem by returning the job of policing the Palestinians lands and people to Palestinians. And then hold them accountable. And hold Israel accountable. I think that once the Palestinians as a people stop worrying about what is going on o the other side of the wall, they (with the world's help) could start making the same kinds of strides in transforming their land into an oasis by using Israel's development as a shining example (OK, unlikely, but the Israeli's have done a heck of a job transforming their land into beautiful, sustainable places.) My anger influences my vote, and the votes of those around me. Those votes dictate who is elected to our local, state, and federal institutions. They also affect policy while the current officeholders are in place (looking towards the next election cycle) The federal and state elections directly influence the policies of our government in regards to diplomatic, military and financial support for either Israel or the Palestinians. Since we are a World Superpower (maybe the only one left), the actions of my government have a direct and serious impact on the lives of the people on both sides of the conflict. So my anger does count. Of course, if I had my way, I'd shift every dollar of support to the Palestinians to finishing the wall ASAP. Once that was up, I would shift those dollars back to the Palestinians, in the form of Education and Home Building. I would encourage the UN to provide peacekeepers in the newly established Palestinian state until such time as they could train their own police force. But that's just me. For many reasons. Israel recently killed 30 civilians in the process of killing terrorists. I'm guessing the some of families of those dead civilians are, as we write, planning to exact revenge on Israel. If it was a child that died then they'll target an Israeli child. If it was a sister that died, then they'll target Israeli women. So you can get angry, but it's not your anger that counts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Get the mailserver that powers this list at http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=17 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:132317 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
