I'm not going to defend Arafat, but I think the French are doing the right thing. There will never be peace between Palestine and Israel until we get Palestine back to the table. That's going to mean forgiving (or ignoring) all of the wrongs done on both sides, showing respect, and then getting back to the negotiation table. Arafat was never a partner for peace because he could never let go of the idea that Palestine was right and Israel was wrong. He was willing to tolerate Israel temporarily, but he was never willing to sign a historical agreement because he feared that it would close the door on Palestinian power forever. The reality is that many of his people respect and revere him no matter what the truth may be - those that don't, don't care that others do. So the only way to move on is to say, "Arafat was a great man, now let's make his dream come true and establish a real peace. Let's get back to the table." So what if it's a lie? If we continue to insult Arafat, we continue to insult his people. If we insult his people, they won't come back to the peace table, and if they don't come back to the peace table then death and misery is our choice.
