Then you're missing out - great, great games (both from the same development team). Especially "Primal" which had some incredible voice acting and an incredibly engrossing story. > Good that you noticed most of the PS2 exclusives suck, but claiming that > 99% > of anything sucks in factually incorrect, and even if it was it is hardly > an excuse. But it's true - 99% of anything effectively sucks. Put another way most things aren't worth your time or bother. Most TV shows, most books, most web sites, most games. Only those very few shining stars are worth bothering with. Most of the PS2 exclusives suck for the same reason that most of the XBox and Cube exclusives suck: because most of anything sucks. 99% of this conversation sucks, for example. ;^) > While it is true that in a two horse race (sorry CG owners) one does not > have to suck, but in this case one of them does, sorry, but it does and to > claim the PS2 holds it's own is nonsence. Visually it stinks, pick any > developer who actually codes for two separate consoles (rather than just > porting the code from one) and you will see the diference, the oldest > example being splinter cell but you could just as easily use Need For > Speed > Underground 2 if you prefer a newer game. Why would you pick cross-coded titles? Those are generally the titles that use the LEAST amount of any systems power. Hold up "Jak III" or "Ratchet and Clank 3" (both from developers that spend all their time building only to PS2) to any XBox title of the genre and both hold their own very nicely. Naughty Dog, in particular, was the first developer to really expose the power inherent in the PS2's vector units. Insomniac and Sucker Punch have improved upon their work (these teams work pretty closely together). Even in the cross platforms titles (and I've said this before) the PS2 still holds it own. Does that mean it looks better or even "as good"? No, of course not! The XBox DEFINITELY looks better - my point is that it doesn't look vastly better as some people claim. "Splinter Cell" IS a good example: it does look better on the XBox - but it still looks pretty damn good on the PS2. There's nothing visually that the XBox can do that would affect gameplay in a PS2 version - most of the lighting effects are present in the PS2 version and ALL of the effects that actually affect gameplay are present. There are no levels, puzzles or other gameplay elements that can be done on an XBox but not on a PS2 due to the differences in system capabilities. Ubi, in general does a fantastic job with their ports (they also create portable code which helps a lot - the drapes in "Splinter Cell" are used in "Prince of Persia" as well for example). "Burnout 3" plays fantastically on both PS2 and XBox - it looks better on XBox, but not so much that gameplay is affected in any way. To illustrate imagine trying to do "Splinter Cell" on the original PS, Saturn or N64. You could do a version of it, sure - but gameplay elements would need to be sacrificed to do so. You simply couldn't do the same game on those consoles. The game would PLAY differently because of the console capabilities (anybody remember "Doom" for the consoles?) That's what I mean by "holding its own" - the XBox looks better, by good a margin, to be sure - but both consoles are still clearly in the same generation of hardware. The differences are purely in degree, not in kind. But it still is a simple equation. If graphics are the most important aspect to you, then get an XBox, hands down, no questions asked. But graphics just aren't the most important thing to most people. They definitely aren't to me.
