I disagree that tips are equally applicable to waitstaff and fast food
workers. As has been pointed out, waitstaff typically earns less than
$2.50/hr, while fast food workers in my (rural) area can start at as
much as $6.25. However, it was misstated that there are two minimum
wages. The difference is that in positions where tips are expected, the
employer can pay the person less because the mimimum wage applies to
average hourly income including tips over a pay period. Should
waitstaff not make minimum wage and report the difference, the employer
is required to make it up. This, however, is a good way to get fired --
if you can't make $2.25 an hour in tips, you're probably doing a lousy job.

I totally agree with the idea of unique tips. When working at Office
Depot, I wasn't allowed to accept tips. However, one guy insisted. He
ended up giving me a coin from western Europe worth approximately half a
cent. I had it until my most recent move (I may still, but don't know
where) because it was something that I couldn't easily replace.

Finally, to address the idea that tips at the end of the meal don't
affect service. His point is that my tip *this trip* doesn't affect my
service *this trip*. This is basically true. But, let's face it, which
of us isn't a repeat customer somewhere? Trust me, if you tip well,
wait staff will argue over getting your table. If you tip badly, wait
staff will...well, they'll argue over getting your table then, too. :-)
