This is actually one of the most positive things to come out of private retirement accounts. You make people more responsible for their own retirement. The other is, hopefully, that Government can't raid the SS funds. One thing we have to keep in mind is the rampant financial illiteracy that plagues the US. That $40K (or whatever you get from SS) isn't much to retire on but it's better then nothing. There are hidden costs that no one is really talking about with privatization. The cost to overhaul and implement systems. The cost to educate. Who pays for this? PS If we go private I want all the money I put into SS back.
