I think it's much more about acceptance and respect, personally.  It's a
desire to get the same benefits as others for the same commitment.

"Love" is an intangible - it's a "nice to have" in marriage but not required
by any means.  However legal marriage offers benefits that committed
homosexual couples have trouble getting: tax breaks, power of attorney,
estate management, etc.

In exchange for those benefits all heterosexuals have to do is sign a paper
claiming a commitment - homosexuals are prevented from doing the same thing
(in most states).
