Right... but this isn't a problem of "a few uninformed poeple" who
just happen to demonize something that is done with some reasonable
frequence (or ease) in spite of their comments. The issue of
extended-family/community living being demonized is wide-sweeping and
increasingly common. There are still some successful communes even
left over from the 60's/70's, like "the Farm" with which my only gripe
is that by their own admission, their advocation of "free love" soon
gave-way to strict rules to enforce monogamy (I have nothing against
them doing that, I just won't ever live there). But the average person
never hears about these successful communes, they only hear about the
Wacos. As a result, rather than being an issue that a parent(s) can
easily control (you homeschool, iirc the Churvis homeschool, etc.)
this is a dominant social force for which there is little recourse to
"buck the trend". Living the way I want to live -- the way I believe
would be healthier for many people than the way we grew up (I'm
speaking specifically of the sort of insular nuclear family I grew up
in -- which I believe is fairly common give or take the abuse) -- is
at best a challenge that will take YEARS to overcome (I'm in the
neighborhood of 7 yrs into having that goal), and at worst flatly
impossible given the current social and legal climate.
