No you don't sound unsympathetic... if anything you sound unsurprisingly under-educated on the subject... that's not an insult at all, I'm just saying most folks haven't read up on this subject, so the details (and there are a lot of details) are lost on a lot of people. Most folks even if they don't demonize the subject think they can intuitively draw correlations between their own life and an extended-family lifestyle without doing the research, but I don't think that's the case. I think there are enough contributory details and they are far enough removed from modern daily living for most people that the correlations that end up being drawn are ... naive for lack of a better word. The reality of the situation when you do the research is I think counter-intuitive to the average urbanite because of all these subtle contributing factors that don't occur to most people without having done the reading.
