*** Well, leaving aside the question of armed intervention, it is time the men of the world started listening more to the women..... my self included.. As some commentator said in a musing sort of way, if people in positions of power had taken the plight of Afghan women more seriously, this conflict might never have escalated to this point. Not trying to start a race or gender war here, just it is a sobering kind of thought. It is good to see that there are going to be two women in the interim government formed in Bonn, but the Afghani woman I heard speak last night on CBC radio noted that there are no women from the Northern part of the country represented, only male 'warlords'. And yet she was cautiously optimistic. Apparently since the early days of the democratic experiment in Afghan, which began in the 60's women have been extensively involved, despite original doubts that it would work. The Taliban rule has been an aberration, in that sense. Both of the two women in the new government are highly competent surgeons, and one defied the Taliban and continued her hospital job. I can't even begin to imagine that kind of courage. My hat goes off and my heart goes out to her and other leaders of peace like her around the world.
