This is certainly the obvious answer. But people here get all worked
up about Israel. It's beyond our borders. We hear about plane crashes
in Greece and Venezuala. We'll hear news of shakeups in the British
paliament. We hear about rebel fighting in African countries. And I
even hear the occasional story about China's absorption of Hong Kong
and desire for Taiwan. But it's rare indeed to hear news from Japan
except for things like dancing robots.

I admit that my interest in Japan's government isn't me being more
informed than the average person. It's just because I stumbled across
something in a blog and it piqued my curiosity.

I guess like many people, I figure I listen to the news every day (NPR
usually) and peruse Yahoo News and count myself reasonably informed. I
know there's lots of political issues going on in countries all over
the world that I don't keep up on, but I figure if something as big as
the government of what I thought was a top 10 significant economic
country is tipping on its head that I would have heard about it.

And I do think it's interesting that I can ask just about anyone "what
do you think about the situation in Israel" and they'll know something
of what's going on and have some kind of opinion. But ask them the
same about Japan and they won't have a clue. I know I wouldn't have
either until I started reading about this.
