I probably wouldn't put the DB server in the DMZ. I would place the DB in
the intranet and open pin holes between the two. Using a beefier DB server,
or even clustering.

Personally, I would probably use a more hardware as I add some network
hardware.  I would add 2 firewall/routers (one between the DMZ and the
Internet and another between the DMZ and my private network.  I would also
have a webserver in the DMZ for the public web server as well as a database
server there for e-commerce, etc and a backup server there to serve a tape
library.  Inside my private network, on a separate subnet, I would have the
same three types of servers for the Intranet.  I would use web services to
communicate between the two web servers.

This, of course, is what I would do if money were not a problem.
