That would only be true if everyone did so of their own free will (I know, it's an overrated concept) > > Medicare, Medicaid, and Social > > Security are all examples of socialist programs that have been > > implemented in the US. > > I don't agree with that in terms of Social Security. > > Theoretically that program isn't a wealth transfer, but a return of > your own money. You earned it, the gov't just took it before you > could do something stupid with it and then gives it back to you when > you're glad they took it. Plus they stop taking it at $94k/yr in > income. With a few tweaks it's simply a gov't enforced savings plan. Theoretically what you're saying is accurate but it is not true in practice. SS pays out a LOT more than any individual put in over their lifetime... if you take the rate of return gain from a SS payout you get a rate of interest that no financial institution could ever afford. In addition, it's not YOUR money that they're giving back to you, it's what was taken in from the current pay-in's. What the recipient gets is based on the current income levels, not on the income levels that were in effect when they paid in to the system. That also brings up the entire concept of asking why the hell the Governement thinks it's better at managing my retierment funds than I am. If Washington wants to enforce a savings plan that's fine and dandy but let me be an adult about it and put the money where *I* want it rathenr than letting them put it into the general fund with a promise of repayment before I theoretically retire.
