Actually he went to other countries in the middle east to study Islam well before going to Pakistan. There in Pakistan he went to a madras school (an Islamic fundamentalist school, similar in idea to church based schools here, but even more restricted in what they teach). While at the school in Pakistan he was recruited into the Taliban. Given how the madrasses teach their students and the conditions they teach them in, these schools are more akin to what we would consider a cult recruiting center than a proper school.
