They are deported if they are caught by the people who look for illegals. Having the police look for illegals has been tried. The result is that when you get a crime in a high-immigrant area, people won't talk to the police, afraid of inconvenient questions like "where's your green card." The police here have a really tight budget -- though I am about to raise holy hell about the failure to look for someone who would attempt to abduct a child in brodd daylight -- but they very sensibly think that it is more important to find out how Juan Doe happened to turn up dead in the South Valley, and whodunnit, than whether or not the witnesses have the proper papers.
