The closest I can come is living in a tent and Volkswagon van for a
year and a half through a Connecticut winter as a child.

I am not saying that I wouldn't probably do what they are doing.

I am saying that they are breaking American laws, and I don't think we
should reward them for that. In fact, I want to do everything I can
think of to make sure they don't benefit any more from their illegal
actions, and to reward those people who have done it the right way.

It had an effect. The rate of illegal immigration AFTER that amnesty
increased sharply.
The balancing laws they passed at the time have never been enforced,
and big business wants to keep it that way, since they are the ones
profiting most form the current situation.
