I think if you only stick to one style you're dead meat on the street. You're speaking exactly to the ATA mindset. I've never heard a WTF instructor claim that Taekwondo is the only thing you need to defend yourself.
Our self defense curriculum is based in Taekwondo, Hapkido, and Muay Thai. I can guarantee that I can defend myself on the street. I've done it before and I can do it again if I have to. Just as a note: WTF Taekwondo teaches full contact sparring, not point fighting, point fighting techniques will get you nowhere on the street. BTW: Robert what style and rank are you? I have not seen a fighter trained in Tae Kwon Do compete in any of the cage fighting circuits, cage fighting which for the most part (minus the rules) mimics what will happen if you do get caught up in a real fight. Taw Kwon Do is more of a stand up fighting where other styles such as Akido, Kenpo, or Jujitsu are for closer quarters and or on the ground fighting. I think if you ever have to fight an experienced fighter on the street you may be in for a rude awakening if you have only learned Taw Kwon Do.
