He's the part you're missing: there's not just 3 options. From your
posts it appears you believe that Israel had only these courses of
action:

(1.) Do nothing.
(2.) Complain to UN.
(3.) Do what they did: completely ignore all diplomacy and start a
surprise, but mild, conventional war.

There's a 4th and even 5th option - both involve some combination of
diplomacy and full scale invasion. That's what I'm advocating. As
I've said numerous times: line up your allies, divide your enemies,
and invade with overwhelming force. Nothing else will work. Period.
Let's look at Lebanon to see why ...

Lebanese civilians are not prepared to be surprised bombed and have
their infrastructure destroyed. Hezbollah is. An air war will not
destroy Hezbollah, but rather embolden them because at the same time
it's destroying some of their expendable infrastructure, their numbers
growing and it's creating international scorn due to the dead
civilians and new refugees.

DING! That's exactly what's happening. It's not a debate anymore
it's a fact. 5 weeks after Israel started bombing Hezbollah,
Hezbollah shot down a helicopter and seems as strong as ever. Maybe
even stronger. And Israel is being attacked in greater waves than it
ever has been.

So what's been accomplished? By any reasonable metric, nothing.

Israel approached this hugely stupid and they're getting the same
ass-kicking that the US is getting in Iraq and here's why:

Swinging wildly at bees never destroyed the hive. For some reason our
military, and every other western military, doesn't seem to have
learned this yet. It's the 21st century; mid 20th century tactics
don't work anymore. Modern war is no longer 90% destroying buildings,
power plants, etc. That just impacts the civilians who then join
the enemy.

Modern warfare is urban warfare and that's all about intelligence and
overwhelming highly trained ground forces. What is the big US
military answer? Bunker Busters. So why is Bin Laden still crawling
around? Because that doesn't work!

You want to get rid of Hezbollah? You want to get Bin Laden? You
send in 500,000 troops trained at close combat urban and cave
fighting. Maybe the US should send in it's Urban Combat Battalion ...
oh yeah ... we don't have one!

But Al Quaeda and Hezbollah do.
