So I want to get Windows Vista and all I wanted to know was, if I buy from a
retailer other than Dell (my comp is a Dell), will I void my warranty. So,
without further ado, here is my chat log between me and my new friend, Raj:

System Initial Question/Comment: I bought an E510 last April. I want to
upgrade to Vista. Do I have to buy from Dell?
System You are now being connected to an agent. Thank you for using Dell

You OK
CU_Rep_Rajesh hi bruce
You Hello
CU_Rep_Rajesh first you have to check dellvistaupgrade, com
You I know that my system will handle it hardware wise.
CU_Rep_Rajesh check for the compatibility requirements and then choose
for options.
You I already checked
You What I want to know is, if I go to the store and buy it this weekend,
do I void my warranty?
CU_Rep_Rajesh we have softwares available online.
CU_Rep_Rajesh what is the current operating system you have with the
system?
You XP MCE
You I know you have it on-line, but I want to upgrade this weekend. If I
buy it on-line , I have to wait until next week, right?
CU_Rep_Rajesh that depends, and we dont guarantee any shipping date, you
may check on the estimated ship date after adding item to cart.
CU_Rep_Rajesh i suggest you take the vista home premium.
CU_Rep_Rajesh is there anything else that I can assist you with regarding
this concern?
You OK, so my original question is, if I buy it from another retailer, do
I void my computer warranty?
You Also, regarding the version, I need to be able to run IIS, SQL
Server2000 and 2005 and ColdFusion Server 7.2
CU_Rep_Rajesh ok
CU_Rep_Rajesh the operating software should be purchase thru dell.
CU_Rep_Rajesh also you need to get the complete software to be able to
install it.
You I know that you want to sell me the software, but what I want to know
is, if I buy it from another retailer, is my computer still under warranty?
And I do NOT need the full version. I only need the upgrade.
        CU_Rep_Rajesh just a sec
CU_Rep_Rajesh thank you for patiently waiting, the warranty will
not be void, you just have to contact tech support dept before installing
it.
CU_Rep_Rajesh you may reach them at 1-800-822-8965 ext 7246699.
CU_Rep_Rajesh is there anything else that I can assist you with
regarding this concern?
        You NO, that is it

I suppose this is what I should expect from a sales rep though. Next time I
talk to Tech Support. That should be an enjoyable exercise in futility.

This also reminds me when I used to work for Wells Fargo Bank as a desktop
and network support dweeb. We had all Dells and EVERY time I called their
support, I got some stupid script reading Nimrod from somewhere overseas who
was English challenged, and once I exhausted his stupid script (which took
about 30 seconds), they would send me to second level support in the U.S.
Finally they came up with a Dell Certified Technician test/certificate
program. Once I got that, I got that coveted "special" number to get
straight to second level. Man that was such a relief. Oh, and 99.9% of the
time, they listened to what I did troubleshooting wise, and just mail me the
new part. Whole transaction with 2nd level took about 5 minutes tops, and
most of that was exchanging pleasantries and making small talk.
