OSX is UNIX and no more closed than Solaris, AIX, HPUX, Irix, or any
of the other flavors out there.

Well MS sure does, thus their crappy flop of an iPod knockoff and the
Xbox.  The thing is, this isn't an OS battle, it's a product battle of
which the OS is a part.  Apple controls the install because they want
to control the product.

A Mac's value isn't just the cutting edge GUI; it's the GUI and the
ease of use wrapped up in a super slick package.  Your point is kind
of like saying that Apple should let people install iPod software on
any MP3 player; wouldn't make any sense.

It's also, btw, why VW/Audi isn't licensing their DSG transmission technology.
