The thing is, this isn't an OS battle, it's a product battle of which the OS is a part. Apple controls the install because they want to control the product. A Mac's value isn't just the cutting edge GUI; it's the GUI and the ease of use wrapped up in a super slick package. Your point is kind of like saying that Apple should let people install iPod software on any MP3 player; wouldn't make any sense.
