That's a surprising assessment considering the past few years.

1) Office 2007 is the largest and most considered UI redesign outside of an
OS in 10 years. It will probably be the single greatest driver of interface
refactoring for the next five years. Here's a professional opinion (well -
other than mine, of course): http://www.useit.com/alertbox/wysiwyg.html -
he's clear: Office 2007 is a new interaction paradigm. That's damn exciting
to me.

2) MS hosts one of the only private university-class theoretical mathematics
departments in the world. The work coming out of that lab is affecting
everything from quantum computing to spam identification.

3) They've made a concerted effort towards both practical application of
upcoming, but now fringe, technology (such as their movement into robotics)
and research (note the recent dramatic increase of published papers coming
out of MS research). Research initiatives like the Digital Life project and
many others are, at least to me, insanely interesting.

4) Their gaming division is turning the Xbox 360 into one of, if not the,
premier digital media hubs available. Adding vertical community integration
with Live for Vista simply improves their standing this regard.

Honestly I don't see MS being any more or any less innovative on the fronts
you mention than Apple. Both companies, in my opinion, are very good at
meeting market opportunities. Together they are the premier patrons of
interface and user experience design and innovation (as current WebSphere
developer I only Wish IBM spent a fraction of those resources).

You're of course entitled to your opinion but it's a shame: you're closing
your eyes to some really cool stuff.
