my experience: In general, if you explain firmly to the dog that the cat is part of the family, the dog will get it. The cat(s) will probably never trust the dog. If you have a big enough fenced yard the dogs may play together. I don't think this will mellow the one you have though. It may keep her from getting bored however. Male/female tends to work in terms of dominance, but that is a rule of thumb only.
My primary caveat: I rescued a stray beagle once and it had this deep baying LOUD bark, which I was told was typical. How close are your neighbors? On 10/10/07, C.
