Geez, where do people get this stuff?? This is so 1970's thinking. Trainers
today realize that with reward-based training you get far better results and
much happier dogs. Would you expect to work for someone with no reward in
sight? Just because someone else thinks you should and forces you too? It's
not much different in the attitude you get with kids that are rewarded for
things they do (chores, etc.) versus ones that are just forced to do it
("because I told you so!")

And of course, it makes a BIG difference as well what breed you work with,
one like this is bred for many generations to want to do what the owner
asks. That's a big difference from other breeds like terriers and hounds
that are bred to work and think independently. Think you can just tell them
what to do and they'll listen? Not likely.

This is just an absurd description of reward-based training. Properly
trained a dog does not get "dependent" on treats, that's basic behavioral
mod and random reinforcement theory. And why would this have anything to do
with whether a dog is scared of their shadow?? It's force-trained dogs that
tend to be scared, because they've been corrected all their life anytime
they do something wrong, even when 9 times out of 10 they didn't understand
what that was. And reward-based training does *not* mean you have to use
treats all the time. My dog for instance will work quite happily most of the
time with a tennis ball for his reward. But bringing out some treats brings
his attention level and desire to work to another level.
