Dammit that sucks about the DVR. I was gonna replace the downstairs system
with the HD DVR/Receiver

I have had DirecTV for almost ten years, and my parents have had it since
maybe 1990 or 1991. It rocks. The things I like about it:

1. No hassles. I deal with Time Warner for my Internet service, and they are
sub-par. DirecTV is a much more well-run outfit, and they never hassle me
about anything.
2. Lots of HD. I just got a new TV and HD DVR and there is now a ton of HD
programming on DirecTV.
3. Sunday Ticket, if you love the NFL it is a must.
4. Online. DirecTV has a good web site- you can order movies, pay your bill,
upgrade equipment, see schedules- all good stuff.

The things I don't like about it:

1. Weather affects reception. Rain, high winds, etc., as Scott said, will
cause some outages. Put your dish in a housing to minimize the problems. A
large box with no top but sturdy sides to shield it from wind, for instance.
2. The DVR sucks compared to Tivo. I had a DirecTivo that just died. DirecTV
decided to make their own and stop partnering with Tivo. Dumb idea, IMHO.
The Tivo folks have by far the best DVR product on the market. My new one
has no obvious way to switch between tuners, and it regularly shows (and
records) the wrong programs on its schedule. If they can figure out the
scheduling thing, I'll be happy.

The local channels thing used to be a big deal, but now they carry local
channels so it isn't a problem any longer. You might have issues if you live
somewhere like DC metro where you are used to getting two sets of channels
and you don't get them both, but that isn't going to be your problem.
