Gould is a good scientist. I do disagree with him regarding his conclusions
in The Mismeasure of Man, when it comes to properly administered IQ
assessments. In parts, his book is a good example of how now matter how good
a scientist is, he can be a complete idiot when working outside of his
field. 

Without starting a whole new thread, The bell curve has been almost
universally dismissed by scientists in the field of intelligence research.
The stats are flawed, (the way Morris handles the multiple regression
analysis is pathetic for instance), and the conclusions based on those stats
are reaching well beyond the data. Moreover the authors were very selective
in terms of the data they presented.
