I'm betting these guys do this sort of thing all time, moving from developer
to developer, because $800 is below the "come-and-get-me" point. $800 isn't
worth anyone's time to try and recover -- and I mean anyone.

A court decision won't mean a thing (realistically it's just one schmuck's
opinion printed on a piece of paper you get to wave around), and if they're
smart they'll just not show up in court, let you have your Summary Judgment,
and then sit back and laugh at you while you scurry around getting ignored
by every collection agency in town because it isn't even worth the time to
write up the initial paperwork.

Just chalk it up to the best $800 lesson you'll ever learn.

And remember: contracts are also nothing more than a bunch of pieces of
paper with a bunch of words printed on them. The only importance they have
is a point of reference in a superior court battle (small claims probably
won't even read it), which isn't worth it until you're talking high five
figures or more on a straightforward claim, or much higher for anything
complicated.

Sad, but true.
