You can make money if you are driven to succeed and keep at it. It's a full time job in the beginning and marketing is key. If they don't put in a 100% effort, research SEO for the site, post articles, put up blogs of the products they want to sell, then they won't be successful.
After all that, I'd look into Google checkout or Yahoo Store. Even GoDaddy offers decent pricing.
