I've said as much and the right-wing folks have said far worse.

There have been many times when I've been down right ashamed of my
country. I've out and out said "I fucking hate my country" sometimes
because of the pain and horror that we've been known to cause.
Guantanamo Bay and Abu Grhaib are only two recent things that have
made me say that.

Does that mean that I am anti-American? Not at all. Quite the opposite
in fact. I have a deep, abiding, steadfast notion of what I want my
country to be. I want it to be a shining example and I get utterly
disgusted at the the things that "America" do in the name of the
people currently in charge. Is that my America? No, it's not. But it
is the America that other people see. So I say, God Damn America! that
America that the pissant powers of the government put out there trying
to take action in my name in ways which I never would countenance.

Wright and I may not have the same vision for what we want America to
be. Same with Bill Ayers (though I suspect he and I might be closer).
But there is no way in hell you get off with claiming they are
anti-American. They are risking their lives and reputations daily by
espousing a vision for America that doesn't run to the mainstream.
They are the veritable definition of an American in that they work
hard to make their vision of a perfect America come to fruition. I
don't happen to agree with their methods in all cases, but they are
nothing to be sneered at.
