I think both Beth and Todd are in stinky situations but it sounds as though they like their jobs, overall, which is very important. It is better to ignore silly little things, like HR-dodos, and ride out temporary rough patches, like a temporary salary reduction, if you have an otherwise good job that you like and where they respect you.
