I talked with 3 different practices today. They all, tentatively, think the bill is a good idea. One in Oregon, one in Texas, one in Maryland. They are, admittedly, progressive, cutting edge practices. They are early adopters of technology (which is why I am talking to them) and help me craft software that then goes into the leading edge of the main curve. Not everything they say is going to be reflective of the bulk of mainstream medicine. But they are usually good indicators of where medicine is going, even if not always great indicators of where they are at today. Medicine in the US is going to change. Going to change with or without healthcare insurance reform. Insurance reform will help make a smoother transition, in my opinion, but we are in a disruptive time. There are two big bubbles coming up, I think. One has been talked about already with alternative energy and cap/trade. The other will be healthcare IT. There will be some serious serious investment. As a result, things will grow fast and furious and not always for the best reasons. But a lot of new paradigms for personalized health care, information exchange and informed choice will arise. Tech companies won't be the only winners and casualties. Physicians will as well. Health insurance? I'd call them dinosaurs nearing the end of their reign. Extinct? Not likely, but rather radically evolved to be totally different than the form they take now. People are going to go out of business. And that's not a bad thing. Times, they are a'changing.
