The fact that this was a US citizen that was illegally detained by people who are properly trained...now imagine when cops, health inspectors, etc...ie people who do not have the specialized training that ICE agents have...are now granted license to pull you over for a stupid reason and detain you just because you look like you might have been born in a foreign country. How much do you want to bet that we don't hear of a single instance of a white person getting detained for not having his papers in order? Not like cops don't abuse their power ever...
Difference is that you are not going to get arrested for not having immigration paperwork to prove that you are here legally. Neither is any other white person who may very well be here illegally. This truck driver also provided a license and other required paperwork. How does an officer determine if you are legal or not? Do you carry a certified copy of your birth certificate around with you? When you get pulled over you will now be asked to provide proof that you are here legally if the cop think you might be here illegally. Do illegals wear different clothes? Do they have a button on their shirt that says "Hi, I am here illegally"? When we start detaining US citizens for crimes that they didn't commit and requiring people to "show their papers" while they are travelling through this country, then we have crossed the line from a free state to a fascist police state. So is it the stop you object to (which this law in no way changes, or allows), or is it the added ability to check immigration status during the stop? If it is the immigration check itself, do you think it should never be allowed? That it is always immaterial to society? That the police should ignore even outright proof of immigration status? Is it the asking for papers you object to, or the caring at all about status?? Or is it the potential for abuse that you are objecting to? An increase in pull-overs JUST to check status? (driving while Mexican, as it is being coined)? For example, if I am pulled over, I am going to be asked for license and insurance, right? for any traffic stop? If I produce it, I am done. No change here. If not, then the officer, in any state with or without this law, is going to try to determine who I am. They are going to radio in the information I give, and in most cases, get a picture of my license on their incar screen. At which point I am done. No change here. If, during the course of that investigation, the police officer determines that I absolutely am illegal, what do YOU think should be done at that point?
