no we haven't forgotten, but the libertarian ideal that if we take
away all of the federal entitlement programs (ie welfare, social
security etc) people will step in and pick up the all slack in one
huge unifying act of human kindness and charity simply isn't rational.
People won't do it, because there's no impetus to do so, because it
doesn't effect them.

Now I'm not saying that the current programs aren't in need of a
massive overhaul, they are, they're bloated, and overrun with cheaters
and people taking advantage of programs they're not really entitled
to. But charity won't take care of all of those that truly need help,
and that's where a state, or federal program needs to step in
(preferably at the state level)
