I don't know much about the particulars of this case, so I won't comment on it directly. However, I will point out that as I've looked at reenactment groups I've noticed that there is a difference between groups which play Confederate soldiers because there is interesting history and both sides need to be represented versus groups that play Confederate soldiers because they strongly identify with the Confederacy and think that the South should have won. In the same fashion, there are groups that look at Nazi Germany with an eye to interesting history and those that look upon it reverentially. What I've seen of this case so far is that the claim is that this dude is part of the later group.
