Actually given the post office's mission, it is model of efficiency. About one quarter of the world's mail is moved through the US postal system. One rate going from Bangor Maine to Los Angeles CA. How much does UPS or FedEx charge for the same service? They are free to set their rates as they like. The post office cannot. By law it is restricted from going into the more lucrative services, however the private industry competition is permitted to skim off USPS customers as they wish. I'd like to see UPS or FexEx handle the same type of competition. They usually go to their professional lobbyists in DC and pay to have the laws changed, to further restrict the post office's ability to compete. That wasn't a Democratic solution. That was one that engineered by the Republican Whip and the Republican Speaker of the House.
Moreover, I would like to see private companies handle one tenth the volume of the post office and survive with the current postal rates. They'd break first. larry -- Larry C.
