You have not explained how me standing in your driveway makes you a
'victim'? What have you suffered? What harm or damage have I inflicted?
Surely it cannot be a crime until/unless I harm/damage you or your property.

Do you know what else should be sacrosanct? My ability to drive my car on a
road and not have to worry about a drunk driver hitting me. Or someone who
thinks speed limits should not exist and loses control of their vehicle, or
decides that red lights and stop signs should be mere suggestions - all
this because they are in 'Murica and feel they can do whatever they want
with a complete disregard for others.

Freedom does not mean you can do whatever you feel like and not suffer the
consequences.

You should spend some time riding with your local EMS crew
to experience the real damage that driving drunk can cause.

Try to triage a scene where you determine that the drunk driver
gets treatment over the dead infant in the back seat of the car he hit
because you have limited resources.

Try to care for a drunk driver who just killed one of your best friends
(who was bringing you dinner at the EMS station) and have to listen to that
drunk driver call your friend a 'cunt' because he ran a red light
and hit her car.

I have had to do those, and more.

If I have to answer a few questions from a police officer late at night in
an effort to ensure no one else has to experience things like that, I am OK
with it. Apparently (and thankfully), so are a lot of other people.

You can call it 'hypothetical safety', but the fact is, the fewer drunk
drivers there are on the road, the safer the roads get.
