That right there could mean LOT'S of things. Perhaps they feel it better
suited for the younger students, but have a different/better method for the
older students. Perhaps they don't feel like the standards have been vetted
enough to offer it across the board at their schools. Who knows.

Going back to your viral example. As a math major, i can't count the number
of times I was forced on a test to take the "scenic route" to an answer in
the name of education vs. expedience.

I distinctly remember having to graph natural logarithms, WITHOUT using the
natural log function. Why? To learn how Taylor Polynomials could be used to
APPROXIMATE natural logs. A problem that might take 5 seconds, took
considerably longer. WHy? Education. To teach me what the natural logs were
about, and other ways to approach the same question.

That is why these viral pictures, these "snippets", are mostly useless.
There is almost always a deeper explanation that needs to be explored
before anything can be proven or dismissed. The parent who supposedly had
an advanced degree (if that's even true), should very well have appreciated
this.
