It's meant to be taken literally, i believe. You want people standing because studies have shown people are more engaged when they are standing up, as opposed to sitting. Also you don't want people getting comfortable.....while standing you are more inclined to get to the point so you can get out of there and sit back down.
So, I think it IS meant to be taken literally. It is here.
