Hey Jacob- I think the cases of guns and drunk drivers are different.
In the case of using a gun, you are responsible for your actions (unless you're really drunk). But with drunk driving, your judgement, your reflexes, etc. are seriously impaired, often without you knowing it. You're not really "yourself", so how can you be held accountable in the same way as someone who does something soberly and deliberately? Maybe the equivalent of a "trigger lock" for a car is the breath analyzer built into the steering wheel. But watch the lawsuit the first time someone sober can't start their car in a crisis because the "drunk sensor" malfunctioned... Our society has some serious problems. -Ben >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Jacob) >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: CF-Community <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: Re: Gun Company Must Pay Teacher's Widow >Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 15:48:04 -0800 > >So, if my wife is killed in a drunk driving accident, I can sue GM because >their cars are, "unsafe, defective and lacked features that would have >prevented a drunk from using it." > >Cool... > >When will people in this country be held accountable for their actions? >Makes me sick. > >At 06:35 PM 11/14/2002 -0500, you wrote: > >I guess if the US won't enact the proper criminal laws, civil laws will >be > >used instead... > > > > > >PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- A jury has awarded the widow of teacher Barry > >Grunow $1.2 million from a gun distributor. > > > >Pam Grunow's lawsuit accused Valor Corp of distributing a gun that was > >"unsafe, defective and lacked features that would > >have prevented a minor from using it." > > > >The case stems from the murder of teacher Barry Grunow by one of his > >students.
