Some people, myself included, still believe in the concept of union.  While
I know that states rights have been trounced for the past 150 years, that
doesn't mean that people still don't believe in the system.

True, of course.  But also based on somewhat dated concepts and ideals.

The creation of the United States was that of many highly patriotic
colonies - each colony worried about their position and standing in this
new, never-before-attempted collective.  That attitude has greatly
lessened (it's still there, but not nearly as important to social
structure).

Secondly the voting procedure was limited by the technology of the time.
Even the most devout democratist would have to admit that a full popular
vote would be unwieldy, impractical and take a prohibitively long time.
That's no longer (as much) the case.
