Hi there. I'm a follower of an 'old time religion'. > The questions were anything, like: > 1. What is that big ball of fire in the sky? Avraham's classic line was "if the moon replaces the sun and the sun replaces the moon then neither is the creator and there must be something greater. The physics of the suns process is nice to know, but not really necessary (how many people can tell me how it works today-non geek that is)
> 5. How can I talk to my dead relatives? Biblically prohibited though it is admitted to exist. If I ever go to the dark side (spamming, etc.) then I'm going to include this in one of the things to do. > 6. How come I can't have sex with a close relative? Actually, you can. Sisters are out but cousins are usually safe. Even sisters aren't 100% bad as the negative genes don't always come into effect and sometimes take generations to show. > 7. Why do people get sick when they eat pork (the whole trichinella > thing, and aversion to pork) Well, if God said no then the answer is no (my take on it). > As times progressed (including the birth of the judeao-christian ethos). The > old religions either: There is no 'Judeo-Christian'. There may have been somewhere around 1ce, but the differences have piled up to the point that there is a Jewish viewpoint and a Christian one and they are quite different. > 1. Died out as their follower's numbers thinned. One response. Judaism > 2. Were destroyed by newer ideas mandated by conquerers One response. Judaism > 3. Adapted and lived on One response. Judaism (we've adapted in some ways but we still have the Shabbos, dietary laws, etc. that our ancestors had) > Until now it seems if there are really only two questions left that could be answered by our religions: > 1. Why are we here? To live a good life. > 2. What happens when we die? What happens when we die is less important than what we do when we're alive. (from my old time stance). > Unless I am mistaken, these are the two issues addressed by all of the major > mainstream religions. Wait till you talk to the Satanists. :) > Okay. So that's my theory. I think that it is just a matter of time before > the current religions either adapt or die out. How would they adapt? I have > no idea, maybe become more scientific. Who knows? Nice theory and there will be some that die out or adapt, but again I have a single response. Judaism. > Have you ever heard a similar argument before? Am I crazy? It just seems so > logical to me. There is a flaw in your logic. It is a flaw that is due to a centrism on a single religion or religious experience. The history of world religions show many that have been around for thousands of years with few changes. Christianity is only 2 thousand years old or so and Islam about 1400. Wicca, despite their claims to an older tradition is about 40 or so years old itself. There are many religions that go back twice as far as Christianity and are still practiced today. Even Christianity is a 'watered down' version of Judaism, or at least it was in the old days. (no Kosher food, no circumcision, no work rules for holidays rescinded, etc.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=5 Host with the leader in ColdFusion hosting.
