But isn't a major part of religion to deal with issues that cannot be dealt with logically? Isn't "faith" the watchword of most (if not all) religions? You are trying to apply logic as if people were logical beings. That ain't gonna work, boyo. We're an emotional breed who like to use logic to rationalize or negate our emotional responses, which is an entirely different thing. So, it seems to me that a more important issue than "would it be logical for a religion to phase out" is "what about a given religion gives it appeal". Why are there so many converted Buddhists, for example? What is it about Judaism that compells Mikey and Judith to follow it? Then compare that to the appeal of a "rational" explanation or rule structure. For example, let's take "do unto others", "love thy neighbor", etc. Rules about treating those around you well. Why is it that Christianity explains this as "What you do unto the least of mine you do unto me" instead of "enlightened self interest: a society with fewer conflicts has a higher output and, therefore, generally a higher standard of living for all members". /me looks around for an answer --BenD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=5 This list and all House of Fusion resources hosted by CFHosting.com.
