The only other decent option is just to start out being friends with her first. She's a coworker, right? Just ask her if she wants to go to lunch some time. Don't make a date of it, just go to lunch with her. Talk about stuff. It doesn't have to be anything really meaningful, just be yourself. It can be casual work chat or it can be movies or music or hobbies or whatever. Heck, make it safe and take the pressure off and invite the mutual friend along. Anything to get comfortable being with her. Once you're comfortable and she thinks of you as someone other than "that guy in the office", then you'll have a better feel for how a date might go.
