I would probably recommend that Ireland is a holiday in it's own right.
Southern Ireland by bicycle is one thing I would like to do one day.

Highway miles. We got back to London from Glastonbury in an afternoon.  You
want to be going through the Lake District in daylight or you will miss some
scenery. The Scottish lowlands... aren't that special; think the Shire and
you will pretty much have it. The highlands are worth at least a fast visit.
What I don't know is where the ferries are to Ireland if you want to do
that, but yeah, consider flying into one airport and out another.
