I agree complete with the relatively simple idea that civil unions (couplings recognized by the state with certain rights and privileges) and Marriages (couplings recognized by some religious ceremony) should be separated.  Then people can simple get one or the other or both at their choosing.

Now the difficulty of this, is the massive changes to city, county, state and federal law codes would be a very large under taking.  But all for the better if you ask me.

There would also have to be a serious look at the legal ramifications of people who get married without a civil contract then separate.  There would be some legal ramifications in my mind if there are children involved.  But, that is already well precedence with out of wedlock parental sharing that is fairly common these days.  So that's mostly covered.

Then there may the some civil cases where a couple lived for 20 years married without a civil contract on how assets accumulated over those 20 years are divided, but I see this is little different then two people who have been in business for 20 years as partners separating and dividing their common assets.  So that shouldn't be a big deal.
