Actually, the page number isn't on the PDF, its in the thumbnail view.  Its 
also screwy in the print dialog.  So for example, on merged PDF I'm looking at 
right now has 24 pages (Acrobat shows 1 of 24).  If I expand Acrobat's pages 
view the thumbnails have a page number underneath them.  These page numbers are 
all 1 (or 2).  Likewise, when I open the print dialog it shows the Pages option 
as (1-1).
