It's Microsoft's approach ... now. But it took them a long time to get there. And the sheer weight of legacy code probably had something to do with that. And I think Microsoft server products got quite a bit of market share for "just working" out of the box. I don't know how successful they'd have been if they'd originally been more like Unix servers.
