In all seriousness this time - it can be considered bad form to give a reference to 
someone you haven't asked first.

Could be considered worse form to give them as a reference, even after they 
have said no to you.

- Considering they said that they had already said that they wouldn't give you a 
reference (or anyone?), are you all that surprised that it turned out badly?

I always have asked references if they mind first, and I usually shoot off an email 
to them if I've got a job interview, just so they know they may recieve a phone call.

IMHO anyways.
