Anyone done a swap in a 66-67 Chevelle with info like this? May
change my mind about using the 4-speed currently in the Chevelle for the Elky
when the Chevelle goes 700-R4. I'd have all the pieces except the trans
itself for the Elky. Hmmm... It'd be a fresh install so shifter
location isn't a concern.

Trannies
Well,
now that I've done it once, it seems pretty easy. :-)
I thought I had to "lift" the tunnel, but turns out I didn't. And a
original 4sp tunnel would be even easier.
All that that is required is a 26 spline clutch, and you must use the C6
slip yoke on the driveshaft (free with TKO purchase). Your GM
bellhousing, fork, pilot bearing, etc will work. Oh, and of course an opening
for the shifter base. I'm not sure about driveshaft length, but I think
you'd have to have yours shortened a bit.
Optionally, but recommended is a GM speedo adapter ($60), and a reverse
light switch ($16).
And a cross member modification is most likely required. The GM
Tremec 5sp uses a standard TH400 trans mount, but I lowered my tailshaft by
3/8" to get the top of the trans to clear the tunnel.
I tried to add significant detail in my article at http://www.chevelles.com/techref/web_pages/pell/Tremec/TremecInstallation.html
Feel free to ask away. Mike,

How difficult was the install? Did you have to buy
anything else to get the tranny to work? There is a large list of
options. What do you actually need? Thanks,Lojac

Trannies Hi Lojac, I have the Tremec 5speed TKO in my
Chevelle, behind a 550hp/550ft lb 454, and I love it. It's a very
strong, great shifting trans, and is a true Overdrive. 5th is 0.68,
whereas the Richmond is a 1:1 5th. The TKO version is rated at
525 ft lbs, where the Richmond is rated at 425-450ft lb.
I've started a Tremec vs Richmond comparison, see it at: http://www.tremectransmissions.com/5sp_comparison.html
The 5 speeds are used for drag racing, road racing, and even tow
trucks.
The Tremec 6 speed is a good trans also, and is rated at 425 ft
lbs. The gear spreads aren't as good as the Tremec 5sp, and
it's considerably larger in size. It would require modifications to
your tunnel, where the Tremec 5 sp will fit in your tunnel without
modifications (if you lower the tailshaft by 3/8").
See here for a very detailed account of my installation: http://www.chevelles.com/techref/web_pages/pell/Tremec/TremecInstallation.html
Feel free to ask more questions. I'm a Tremec distributor, and
have learned quite a lot about them. I can also offer a discount to
the list members. :-)
