Rick,
I used laminate beams..got them from menards...I went with the 14 in , 20' for the 18 ft door I put in, but they come up to 24 ' long IIRC.. I tend to overbuild for strong..typical farmer homemade attitude...ya know..

but steel is good choice too....thats what a pole barn company used on my walters bld ( morton clone) the door opening is 24 W, and its at least an 8 in beam,,,maybe more...could be a 12...you know how it is...you don't think about it after its done..

are you going to concrete the floor right away ?

I just pulled out the post from my building that we put up in the '60s...the poles were just like new...hard to believe..no rot to speak of at all...those were single poles- not the new laminated ones...I still don't know how I feel about those..JMHO

Rick,

I used a 12" I beam as I have brick above the door openings. If you are
siding you can use engineered lumber and each manufacture will give to load ratings based on spans. Conventual lumber will eventually sag and shrink -
Engineered lumber will not. I built my house using Truss Joist Institute
(TJI) products and they makes headers called Microlams.

I'm sure glad that I asked the question. Door size seems like a
no brainer, but the additional input has been enlightening. Should
have asked you(se) guys a long time ago. Thanx a bunch. I may
need to spend some time with that garage junkies web site.

For the 18 & 20 foot doors, what did you guys use for a header?

I'd like to go taller with the doors, but due to zoning set backs &
proximity to the house I don't dare.

  Thanx again.
