I might make two suggestions: 1, since he is vomiting and the very small ones go into hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) so easy...... You can buy some plain Pedialyte in the baby section of the grocery, don't get any flavored kind. Then take an eyedropper and put droppers full of the Pedialyte in his mouth. I would at first do it every 30 mins and at least every hour....this helps him to not dehydrate and corrects the electrolyte balance from the vomiting. 2. Then buy a tube of nutra-cal, it is a high calorie supplement you can put a little of the paste in the roof of his mouth and it will give him nutrients and keep his blood sugar up. This is all just support first aid for him until the doctor can figure out how to treat him. I have saved dogs from Parvo with this method when they were dying in the vets offices with intravenous care. If you don't dare the nutra-cal, at least use the Pedialyte instead of water, because the imbalance in his electrolytes will keep his stomach nauseous and he will be able to keep nothing down..... and the Pedialyte will balance it, get the plain kind. You can get it in drug stores, groceries etc. in the baby sections. If he has vomited and goes all nite with out nourishment I worry for him going hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) which makes everything worse. I would make sure I gave him droppers full of the pedialyte through the night, dilute it half with water if you want, by using the dropper he has to take it. Why does he have to have his stomach empty? Doesn't the Vet know how easy these small ones go low blood sugar? Below is some data from a breeder about small chis.
Love and prayers for Goliath, Phylis Notes from a breeder on small Chi's (this is not me, I only found this on the net if you want the link let me know) We charge very high prices for small Chihuahuas, because # 1. they require lots of extra care from tube feeding as runt newborns, to all night intensive care sessions every time they are wormed or vaccinated. (Ask your vet what he'd charge to keep and raise one for 3-4 months, and you'll quickly find out why they are $1500 and up. #2. They are rare, because many breeders lose theirs to low blood sugar, or infections from normal flora, or Modified live virus vaccines, since they have weaker immune systems. It takes a lot of care to get them to live and be healthy. ----- Original Message ----- From: shirley osterholt To: [email protected] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2007 5:09 PM Subject: [Chihuahuas] HELP!!! SICK BABY CHI My Goliath started vomiting Sunday and I took him to the Vet. Goliath is 13 weeks and weighs 2.40. I took him to the Vets where he dx. him as having Tonsillitis and because of his small weight he decided to put him on Amoxicillian instead of giving him a shot. He also said he wanted to wait for a week for giving him his 3 mos. shot for which I know is right. Anyways, he is NOT keeping the Amoxiciallian down and doesn't appear to be drinking very little water. I just called the Vet on an emergency basis and he told me to hold the Amoxillian for the night with letting him have only ice cube and water. In AM give him another try on the Amoxicillian and if he can't keep the medication down I should call the office and bring him in. I probably made a mistake or made it worse as I had given him a very very small amount of canned food so now he has to have his stomach completely empty and I feel so badly now. He is my 1st Chihuahua and I am just so worried about him. Please, any advise would help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shape Yahoo! in your own image.
